Serra Oruç

KALA operates like a design direction studio, bringing designs together with the correct narratives and presenting them to audiences with clarity, depth and cultural relevance.

Founder Serra Oruç is a fourth generation heir of an entrepreneurial family, she stands among the most distinguished authorities in the world of carpets. A legacy rooted in the 1950s, when her family first established its presence in the rug trade.

Her journey into the realm of carpet design became a profound encounter with an ancient cultural heritage, awakening a deep and enduring fascination. Guided by this passion, she has dedicated her research to exploring the place of Anatolian weaving traditions within the language of contemporary design. As former editor of ALIVE Magazine, she bridges traditional craft with contemporary art, advising artists and brands while advocating for the relevance of carpets as living cultural narratives.

Today she continues her multidisciplinary practice as a curator, researcher and elegantly bridging the richness of heritage with the vision of modern creative expression.

Consultancy

We challenge the historical separation between art and craft.Through strategic consultancy, we reposition material practices as contemporary cultural capital.

We work with artisans, institutions and collectors to create new narratives and new visibility for embodied knowledge.

Curatorial Studies

Craft does not exist outside contemporary art—it is contemporary art when framed through critical engagement. The gestures of weaving, carving, forging and shaping clay become quiet forms of resistance, slowing time against the acceleration of industry. Curated exhibitions foreground these practices as sustainable cultural expressions, positioning craft as both material inquiry and critical discourse.

Community

Craft is a carrier of memory. It is not something nostalgic yet it is a process that carries many stories that tell about the day we are living. Craft is not tradition frozen in time. From artisans to designers, galleries to artists and collectors – a platform will be the voice of future knowledge.
